American Jackal: Is the first in a series of thrillers for Psychiatrist Troy Stoker M.D. Without a doubt, authors Dr. Francis Bandettini & Matt Nilsen, have a first rate character on their hands. This was one of those books that got me knotted up with suspense. It’s a love/hate feeling I get when reading sometimes. Several times, I could feel my own anxiety in some of the more intense scenes. The writing is exceptional, because not only did it keep me on my toes, but the characters are so real, they are easy to love/hate and identify with. I became a fan just on that score alone.The main character, Dr. Troy Stoker is a psychiatrist who is former military, the kind of guy who does the right thing, no matter what the cost, even if it means taking on a General head on and the risk of being tossed into the brig with a dishonorable discharge.
I liked this character from the start. As the book progresses we go from 1992 to present day and into a mystery that in volves the town of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Ann Higgins is the wife of the Lieutenant Governor-elect, Kent Higgins. While showing a house to some perspective clients She accidently stumbles upon an oddly designed basement, that causes her to investigate further, she discovers evil has come to her quiet town, soon Ann becomes a target and realizes murder is not too high a risk for the shadowy figure who needs her silenced once and for all.
This is a very involved and detailed novel. Each character only serves to add another layer to mystery to what can only be called an epic tale. If you love brilliant writing, 3 dimensional characters and sitting on the edge of your seat? Then this is the book for you! I will never look at coyotes the same…ever again!

I had the opportunity to listen to this book via Audible. I listened to it as I traveled to and from shopping trips to town along with while I was shopping my usual grocery shopping list. It kept my ADHD mind attentive the entire time!
What I liked most about this book is the location it starts out at giving the listener a solid base from which the rest of the story became believable. I felt like I was right there with them as a sidekick during all the twists and turns. Several of the settings in which events happened are towns I have personally lived in and are spot on.
The book didn't stop there with local area in which the characters lived. It took you on a ride to the States Capital and all the way to Washington DC.
If you like to read or listen to a book that has Thriller, Suspense, Politics, Psychiatry, the underground illegal drug world and who are many times at the helm along with Identity Theft, this book is for you!
I look forward to listening to the sequel!
This was a definitely a brilliant, page-turning novel with believable characters and wonderful suspense. The author's unique, simple and stylistic writing will put you in a transcendence far beyond your wildest imagination.. well, only if you have crazy imagination like I do... The sequence of events will keep you referring back to earlier portions of the book that enhances the vibe of the book.
This book contains all the mysterious excitement I've been look for in a book. Definitely very exhilarating and thrilling, a must read for all young adults with a passion in crime and mystery. It was a delightful journey of twists and turns.
Just think Brad Pitt's Fight Club mix with Liam Neeson's Taken... Well that's how I see view this book.
I absolutely loved American Jackal! I can’t wait to read more from Dr. Francis Bandettini and Matt Nilsen—this was my first book from them and I’m so glad I discovered it. I couldn’t put the book down, even with it being so long. It kept me on edge the entire time, and I was always wondering what would happen next. Just when I thought I knew what would happen, the authors would throw in a twist to the plot.
I won’t give away any spoilers, but there is a GREAT synopsis of the book in the description which is what initially drew me in (on top of all the great reviews).
The characters were very developed and I felt like I knew Troy Stoker in real life. Even the supporting characters were multidimensional and not bland like they have been in other books I read.
Thrillers are one of my favorite genres of books to read, and when it comes to them, this ranks very high on my list of all time favorites. It has to be either a really good, or really bad book for me to write a review and this was a hit! And for 0.99 cents, you can’t beat it!
Absolutely loved it! Written in classic thriller fashion, author Bandettini skillfully introduces the characters that play pivotal roles in this story of power, corruption and subterfuge. Bandettini adroitly sets the scene in Sioux Falls SD, a nice salt of the earth type of town where life is good and its citizens even better, that is until hidden layers of secrets are slowly uncovered to reveal an ugly vein. This is a page turner, well written and worth the time it takes to read it. This is my first introduction to author Dr. Francis Bandettini, it certainly won't be the last time that I read his novels. An unreserved two thumbs up, high fives and a 5 star rating from me.
This is the best book that I have ever read! It keeps you on the edge of your seat, and sometimes squirming. There are some very funny one liners in there also. I especially loved the use of the word "THYROID" by one disgruntled female a lot. I am not kidding..... this is so action packed, and has you going "oh no, what's gonna happen", kind of like people who talk to the tv, like they are going to listen. I would definitely love to read many more by this author. He is really funny and he transfers that to his lead character (shhh, a secret Dr B is in Troy Stoker.....so don't say that could never be), as well. You will not regret reading the first chapter. I guarantee you, you will not want to put it down at all!!!! And, YES, it is worth reading over and over......you focus on different things that you may not have the first time, and it is just as good, or better, each time you do read it! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
